Welcome!

Two years ago, British Telecom (BT) introduced four new telephone directory phone books to replace the single telephone directory covering all of Northern Ireland. The map on the Background page shows the regional breakdown.

BT says it conducted extensive research amongst its residential and business customers but they refuse to make this research public. However, there is outrage from Northern Ireland telephone users about the scrapping of the one book which covered all of the Province. We say BRING BACK ONE BOOK and we invite you to add your support.

The purpose of this site is to provide a platform for residents and business owners in Northern Ireland to register their disgust about these changes. Perhaps, if enough people show their support and register their complaint, BT may at some point isten to the overwhelming majority and Bring Back One Book .... sooner rather than later!

Updates ....

July 2008

This site has now had over 650 people sign the online petition and almost 5000 people have voted in the online poll, with 94% of voters stating that they want BT to bring back the one book.

Despite this, BT still refuse to re-instate the one book for the whole of NI or even produce the 'research' which they claim led to its demise in the first place.

May 2007

BT have removed the facility for Northern Ireland customers to obtain free directories for areas not covered within their local directory. N.I. customers are now charged £10 for additional copies of the N.I. telephone directories.

Comment

This is an appalling abuse of their Northern Ireland customers as, having committed to providing complimentary copies of other region books in order to take the 'heat' out of objections about removing the one book for Northern Ireland, they stealthily introduce charges when the storm has passed. Bring Back One Book urges you to contact OFCOM and register your complaint about BT introducing these charges.

17th September 2005

BT have had to apologise for dropping a major clanger in omitting advertisements in the new South-Eastern Region book and arrange for all 118,000 books to be re-printed. Wouldn't have happened if there had only been one book. Read more here.

27th December 2004

The BRING BACK ONE BOOK campaign was again highlighted on BBC Radio Ulster's Talkback 'Review of the Year 2004'.

Over 2000 people have now voted on this site since its launch, with over 96% of voters wanting BT to Bring One Book Back. Also, over 400 people have signed the online petition and yet BT still refuse to re-instate the 'old' BT directory covering the whole of Northern Ireland or even publish their research to support their claim that "80%" of the people in Northern Ireland said that they wanted four telephone books.

Shame on you, BT.

5th May 2004

Following the high-profile support this site has obtained since launch, a representative from BT appeared on BBC's Radio Ulster's Talkback Programme on 5th May 2004. He stated that ....

  • The number of complaints they have received about this matter are "in line" with complaints received when a normal phone book comes out

  • They are not prepared to reveal any information about their research, in which they claim that "80%" of the people in Northern Ireland said that they wanted four books, as opposed to one book.

  • They have now changed their policy and are prepared to give each of the four books to anyone who requests them

  • "If customers overwhelmingly told us [that they wanted one book back] then we would have to listen to it."

Comment

It is obvious that, despite the "overwhelming" majority of their customers opposing this change, BT are not prepared to listen to their customers nor are they prepared to publicly substantiate their 'research' claims.

This campaign calls for BT to Bring Back One Book and, based on the comments made on this site, we believe that the vast majority do not want four books, even if they are given out for no additional charge.

We urge those opposed to these changes to continue to leave your comments on this site but also contact BT to have your objection registered.

  • Residential Customers - Ring free on 0800 800 150 or Head Office at 028 9032 7327

  • Business Customers - Ring free on 0800 400 400 or Head Office at 028 9032 7327

We would also suggest that you ring 0800 833 400 to ask for a copy of each book. Perhaps the financial impact of having to provide fours books to everyone (as opposed to one) will mean more to BT than the objections raised here and elsewhere by their customers .....

Time will tell if BT are then prepared to "listen".

Thank you for your continued support.
